High Sugar Intake May Increase Risk for Pancreatic Cancer.

A large population based study of 77,797 men and women in Sweden reported that high consumption of sugar and soft drinks increased the risk for pancreatic cancer. Physical Activity Improves Cancer Survival

Similar data was found in patients who were diagnosed with colon cancer. Physical activity was found to decrease the risk of colon cancer recurrence by 49%!

Olive Oil Can Help Cut Your Cancer Risk
A study of 182 European men found that those men who consumed 25 ml (5 tsp) of olive oil daily had reduced levels of 8oxodG, a substance that is a marker of oxidative damage to cells. This damage leads to cancer as well as many other chronic diseases. This explains why cancer and heart disease rates are lower in southern Europe than in Northern Europe where olive oil is not consumed in large quantities.

Corn Oil Appears to Increase Growth of Prostate Cancer Cells
Corn oil is an omega-6 fatty acid. The American diet is based on corn oil because of the move away from animal fats, lard, cholesterol and trans-fats. Unfortunately, this is not the healthiest choice. Corn oil contains arachadonic acid which has been shown in laboratory studies to encourage growth of prostate cancer cells. The rise in prostate cancer could be directly related to our diets.

Omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fatty fish, olive oil, and flaxseed have the opposite effect. They help to prevent cancer and retard cancer growth. The take-home message, eat more omega-3 fatty acids and limit your corn oil consumption.

Low-Protein, Low-Calorie Diet or Endurance Training May Decrease the Risk of Cancer
A study from Washington University in St. Louis Missouri has demonstrated that people who either eat a low-protein, low-calorie diet (vegetarians) or those who performed endurance training had significantly lower levels of blood markers that are associated with some types of cancer compared to healthy sedentary people. They measured insulin growth factor (IGF-1), insulin, free sex hormones and C-reactive protein. These markers are thought to be associated with a higher risk of cancer. The findings were significant and remained even after correcting for body mass index (BMI). Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2006; 84:1456-1462.

Grapes Contain Cancer Fighting Substances
Researchers at the University of Illinois are studying the cancer fighting effects of grapes. Grapes contain flavonoids which are potent anti-oxidants. They were found to inhibit enzymes that are vital for cancer cell growth and reproduction. The benefit was found for whole grapes but is not likely to occur with vitamin supplements. More studies are ongoing. The take-home message is to eat whole foods not supplements.
