Nutrition for Cancer Patients

"He who takes medicine and neglects to diet wastes the skill of his doctors."

~Chinese Proverb

One of the most important things a cancer patient, survivor, or a family member of a cancer patient should now is how diet affects a person's life and risk of cancer and other diseases. This information is not only important for the cancer patient who may be in one of several stages of diagnosis, treatment, or survivorship, but also for those who want to decrease their risk of cancer and other diseases.

The American Cancer Society's Nutrition Recommendations are:

  • Eat a variety of healthful foods, with an emphasis on plant sources.
  • Choose whole grains in preference of processed (refined) grains and sugars.
  • Limit consumption of red meats, especially those high in fat and processed.
  • Choose foods that help to maintain a healthful weight.
  • Limit consumption of alcoholic beverages (one drink per day for women, two drinks per day for men).

A Personal Note From Dr. Avery

I feel so strongly about the importance of good nutrition that I would like to talk to you personally! Good nutrition is so important for your health. If you are finding it too difficult to get the nutrients you need, I highly recommend Juice Plus+. It is the simple, convenient, and inexpensive way to add more nutrition from fruits and vegetables to your diet, every day. You can get more information by going to the Juice Plus+ website. If you want to speak to me personally, send me an e-mail with your contact information and I will call you and answer any question you may have. I can even send you more information on CD.

More Fruits and Vegetables is a Key to Keeping Your Best Health. The old recommendation suggested five servings daily, but recently that has been changed to 7-13 servings. The average American only eats three servings a day! Raw fruits and vegetables are likely better than cooked but the problem is Americans don't eat enough of these. Can't get enough fruits and vegetables in your diet? What do I do? The first thing you should do is make an effort to change your diet. If eating 7-13 servings daily is too difficult (and it very well may be) then you can try juicing. Juicing is an excellent way to get all the nutrients you need to help make you healthy but it is time intensive. An alternative if you can't eat or juice enough vegetables and fruits is to use Juice Plus+. It is whole food nutrition that provides the nutrients of 17 fruits, vegetables and grains. Juice Plus+ takes natural, pesticide free foods, juices them and removes the water, salt and sugar. They are in a capsule form for adults or a chewable or gummi form for children or for those who can't swallow a capsule. Because they are sugar free and low in salt they are safe for diabetic patients and those with heart disease.
