About Dr. Avery

"Life is not merely to be alive, but to be well."

~Marcus Valerius Martial

Dr. Avery on Complementary Therapies and Citrine Sun.
Dr. Avery is a board certified medical oncologist and hematologist and the founder of Citrine Sun. His primary interest is in taking care of his cancer patients and utilizes a holistic approach to treating his patients. This method is different than most oncologists in that he offers standard therapies but to also tries to ease the affects of the treatments by incorporating combinations of diet, complementary therapies including massage and acupuncture and the natural therapies.  As an oncologist, Dr. Avery supports the use of chemotherapy to treat cancer but also seeks to embrace the benefits of complementary medicine to improve their quality of life.

Over the years, his research has shown him that it is difficult to find many of these complementary therapies. They are not readily available to patients and are still frowned upon by the oncology community at large. It is not because these therapies are new; centuries of experience exist behind many of these therapies from all around the world. In the past, these therapies were dismissed as unproven or even shams. Now, active and on-going research is proving the benefit of these therapies.

In the not too distant future, Dr. Avery believes complementary medicines will become a mainstay to modern cancer therapy. They are an excellent complement to chemotherapy for the main purpose of helping patients tolerate chemotherapy better. The "no pain, no gain" approach to chemotherapy is detrimental not only to the patient but also to the reputation of the oncology community. Citrine Sun.com hopes to become your source for information and natural supplements for cancer patients. He is confident in his products and backs them with medical research.

More About Dr. Avery
Dr. Avery is currently on staff at Missouri Hematology and Oncology Care in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to his practice, he actively participates in national cooperative group research trials, patient education and medical research. He frequently gives presentations in the St. Louis area on topics related to cancer treatments and new discoveries in cancer. Dr. Avery has taken a special interest in nutrition and how it applies to the prevention of diseases and improving quality of life for cancer patients and cancer survivors. This interest was cultivated early in his career when he was introduced to complementary medicine in Landstuhl, Germany, where he was chief of hematology and oncology services.

While in Germany, Dr. Avery learned that the German medical system provides state of the art oncology care and embraces complementary medicines. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of therapies that seek to treat disease in a natural way. These treatments involve the use of massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, guided imagery, meditation, and herbs to treat the whole patient. Therapies like these have been around for centuries and have been found in recent times to be helpful for cancer patients.

Another interest of Dr. Avery's is in palliative care. He works for a national hospice company helping to provide relief to those who are terminally ill. The goal of palliative care, or also called comfort care, is to improve the quality of a seriously ill person's life. It is not to cure, but to provide comfort and maintain the highest possible quality of life for as long as life remains.
